We had been trying to do something like this at our office, but we could not do it. There's stuff like Quickbooks Online but that's pretty expensive.
One thing your client can do is use some kind of remote desktop software. I had tried GoTo Meeting for a while and it worked pretty well. You just needed to have quickbooks always running one one of the computers, then use the other to remote access that first computer.

I stopped using GoTo Meeting because it stopped being free, lol. But yeah, that was my foray into this. I would recommend you have him try QuickBooks Online. QuickBooks Online has improved massively recently, and it's really not all that expensive (the 'Essentials' edition is $240/year - which is just about what the actual QuickBooks for Windows software costs per year as well). Trying to sync QuickBooks desktop between two locations is just asking for data loss.
Another good option is to just have him carry it around on a USB thumb drive - plug it into whichever computer he wants to work on and use the data from the thumb drive. You put the Quickbooks data in a dropbox folder, and then have it sync on both computers. Sometimes the Quickbooks data file won't open when you do this, so you just have to pause Dropbox's syncing option until you close Quickbooks. You can't enter data in Quickbooks on both computers at the same time. I advise making sure Quickbooks is completely closed on one computer before attempting to use the other. If you want this kind of functionality, you need the network version of Quickbooks.
It’s your time, Canada. Joining forces with your techy neighbor to the south, QuickBooks Canada now offers with TSheets. It’s the easy way to keep everyone and everything in sync, no matter where work takes off. This is a match made in the Northern Lights, because it comes with real star power. With versatile, reporting and management, TSheets takes care of business in more ways than one. Take, for example. This woodworking and cabinetry company based in Vancouver, BC, used to spend four hours a week entering and correcting employee time cards. With employees spread out across more than 10 jobs and tracking hours to more than 30 different service codes, the financial controller at Precisionwerkz Canada dreaded Mondays, and the often incomplete and incoherent timesheets that came with them.
That is, until TSheets came to light. “We wanted to have our customer list and job codes, class codes and item numbers — all the info that we already had in QuickBooks — seamlessly transition from a into our QuickBooks account,” notes Alision Lui, the financial controller at Precisionwerkz Canada. “TSheets met those requirements, offered mobile apps for our on-the-go employees, as well as the best customer support.” After TSheets, Precisionwerkz estimates the company saves close to $6,000 annually. Now that’s a load off. TSheets eliminates the errors and complications of manual timesheets and data entry. Employees have a range of flexible ways to — including online or offline, on a computer, tablet or smartphone, even by text, tweet or a quick phone call.
Time can be tracked against customers, employees, job codes, service items and classes. With one-click syncing, TSheets automatically uploads approved tracked time to the weekly timesheets in QuickBooks, streamlining job costing, payroll, invoicing and more. It’s practically cosmic, this instant connection. Get to know Kelsie Medel – Kelsie is a native Idahoan who once held the title of Idaho’s “Elk Turd Throwing Queen.” (And she’s got the sash to prove it.) She graduated from college in three short years with a double major in Business Administration and Sports Management - which tells you pretty much everything you need to know. She loves sports (watching playing winning emphasis on winning), traveling, and hanging out with her 10-year-old son.
Here at TSheets, she currently holds the title of “Queen of Getting Stuff Done.”.
